History of the Lubeck Church of Christ

The first property owned by the congregation was located at Route 1, Box 375, Washington,WV.
The property was deeded October 4, 1957 by Fred L. and Lottie L. Morlan to James W. Riley,Neal Armstrong and J. V. Barnhouse of the Lubeck Church of Christ
The first building was constructed by Lawrence Fleak and is the basement and class rooms of our present building.
First service was held in the basement June 29, 1958. There were 34 in attendance.

In 1963 a new auditorium was constructed over the initial basement. First service in new auditorium occurred June 30, 1963, with 99 attending. New auditorium was built by Lawrence Fleak.

In 1975 an annex was constructed on the front of the auditorium which housed new restrooms and offices for the preacher and secretary.

On May 22, 1988 a special groundbreaking was held for the expansion of our present building. Brother Neal Armstrong, Vernon Barnhouse, Bill Farnsworth, Paul Hofmann and Sister Alta Lafferre participated in the ceremony.
First service in new building was June 25, 1989.
Dedication of the new building was September 1989.

The Church bulletin "The Lubeck Messenger" was started by Ken Schott on June 19, 1966.

The library was begun in 1977 with books donated in memory of Sister Evelyn Elizabeth Dotson.

Ladies Day started in 1980 by Sharon Summers.

Friends Day (November 1, 1987) - 368 attended worship service.

In January 1988 "Dial-a-Devotion" was started. Over 250 calls were received the first week.

In September 2002 we purchased the Old Lubeck Fire Station, a building and parcel of ground adjoining the church grounds. Currently discussions are underway as to how best to utilize this facility.
